And a final comment

Well guess what.
I WON A PRIZE!
Thank you to the person(s) who nominated me.
I think a prize for "progress" shows what a low base I started from :-)
I have learned a lot: so  "thank you" to Emma and all who helped with the whole "23Things" program.

Thing 23 - The Last Post

Reflecting on the last 10 weeks, I  find it quite difficult to say what I enjoyed most, or what is most useful, but I think that, for me, it will be the iGoogle start page, (once I get some more of the other useful "things" on it).  Google Docs seems a jolly good thing to have too. However, from the fun point of view, adding the picture from Creative Commons and the video from UTube were pretty good

My post 23 Things resolution is to try to use Firefox more as it seemed really speedy and thorough.

I can see that Web 2.0 will be used increasingly in the library world, as in others, as it becomes more and more necessary to be proactive. Modern technology will continue to progress and  new innovations will be slotted into daily life as others fade away. People are already beginning  to expect more, so things like animated power point presentations will become very common place.

I began this adventure with mixed feelings and truthfully there have been some things I would not want to use for myself, like Facebook and Twitter, but I have found it really interesting, if sometimes challenging and even more time consuming than I had expected. (It is far too easy to get side-tracked.)

However, here I am, with one day to go and about to register completion.

Hurrah!!

Thing 22 - SlideShare

I started by looking at  the "Implemting a 23 Things Type Program at Your Library" slide show at http://www.librarianbyday.net/  but moved on to other items about  some of the individual 23Things.

Slide share looks like a really useful tool for anyone having to make a presentation. I think you can even add animated power point templaes from U Tube via a site called "presentermedia".

Even better from the point of view of web 2.0 users, there are slide shows about some of the  "23 Things", such as Google Docs. Quite a lot are in Spanish; so I had a look at those too.

Only the final "thing" to do now.

Thing 21 - Google Docs

Although I have uploaded a file I had already completed, I can see this is a great way of getting data from others directly into a file; thus reducing time and effort for everyone. Also good if you want someone to edit or comment on your work.
Now for thing 22.

Thing 20 - Editing a wiki

Having chosen not to add my blog to the UK Library Blogs (it being of no interest to Librarian's as such), I spent quite a while looking at wickis about places I knew. I learned quite a lot about them but, since I could contribute nothing of note, I simply, made a very minor alteration to a paragraph about Billericay which I imagine will go unnoticed. However I now know how to do that.

Thing 19 You Tube

Well adding the You Tube video  was easy enough.

Only 4 more "things" to go.

"Cheap Flights" with subtitles

Thing 18 - Creative Commons

I like the simplicity of this picture, which was taken on 26 February 2011 in Cambo House Gardens.

Thankfully, adding it to my blog was not difficult. I managed to lose my first attempt at this post before I had published it.

Thing 17 - Flickr

Well; I  have a Flickr account and have added  photo's and comments about them.
I have now have friends on Flickr and I've made the photos visible to them.
I have also viewed some of Suzanne's  and some of  Sharon's pics.
That all took rather a long time so I'm off for a cup of tea now.

Things 15 and 16 - Endnote Web & Zotero

Not for me of course but interesting to see and, I'm sure, incredibly useful tools.
I think I'll have a cup of tea now and have a go at the next lot of 23 things tomorrow (if work doesn't get in the way :-).

Thing 14 - Diigo

Well here I am 3 weeks behind. Lots of struggling with Diigo and had to email them in the end but I have now set that up. I can see that it could be useful to bookmark sites and highlight items bought, so that when someone says,  " you bought a  'bla bla bla' for 'so and so' 3 months ago",  I can go straight to it on the site (if it isn't obsoleted of  course). However I do have a nice list of favourite web sites already of course.
Now for things 15 and 16.

Thing 13 Reflection on Things 1-12

What have I found most useful so far?

I like Firefox and igoogle and blogging is useful to keep records of what I have done, although I doubt I will keep that up after this exercise.

I'm not very confident with the new "things". I find there are so many "things" you can do with the "things" and, as with  most "things" they are only easy when you know how. There is a lot of finding out how to do "things" I might not want to do,  which is quite time consuming.

However, as with the general introduction of email, the more you use something the more it becomes part of your everyday life; so, when twitter is the best way to keep up with something, that's what I'll be doing.

Thing 12 Facebook

I had a look at Facebook and, although I don't think it is for me on a personal level,  the sites for the libraries were all very good; including, of course, the UoW Library. The new Birmingham Libary looks enormous. It is some years since I was lucky enough to visit The British Library. It was nice to see the lovely seat/sculpture is pictured.
There are numerous links on Facebook pages and you can interact and leave comments.  A good way to advertise information and get feed back now that so many students use this medium.

Thing 10 and 11 Twitter post 2

OK; so now I have found 2 random  #UoW23 tweeters to follow. I am now supposed to interact with them.
I expect I'll just say "Hello I'm following you."  and hope it doesn't scare them.
Also a stranger form the USA is now following me on Twitter. I can't imagine why?
This is all taking up much more time than I had anticipated.
Now I find I can't send a message to a person who is not following me. That's probably a good thing.
I had better follow my followers then.
That worked and, talking of work, I had better do some.

Things 10 & 11 - Twitter

Well I've done that now. Set up a twitter account. Don't seem to be able to find anyone to follow on #UoW23. Perhaps next week; or have I done something wrong?
Will have a look at Thing 12 next week.

Thing 9 - Firefox

Only a week late but I have installed Firefox with lovely daffodils at the top of the screen.

I had a go at googling myself and found out that my middle daughter is still living with me. I must find out where she is hiding.

Things 7 & 8 - Doodle - add to iGoogle page

Have done thing 7; which was quite easy . Am about to attept thing 8, as it seems that will make it easier to keep an eye on thing 7. Perhaps I will have a reply to my attempted meeting arrangement.

Things 4, 5 & 6 - iGoogle Start page; RSS Feeds - 23 Things feed

Well that was a challenge for me. You can get lost in all the information you could add to your page but I have managed it and, with help, have set it as an option as my start up.
I  think that this "23 things" assumes that I know more than I do about how to link things.
However I have a dictionary, weather, date and time, spanish word a day, art of the day, and news on my start page.
And of course the 23 things RSS feed!

Things 1,2 &3 - Create a Blog; Write First Post; Register for 23 Things

Well at least I've got this far .

Being a product of my own generation when, as a child, I could only contact my aunt or grandmother by snail mail and all wrist watches had to be wound to keep them going, I thought I had better find out about this whole Web 2.0 interctive instant communication thing.

Does the "Best wishes" at the end of Emma's 23 Things email really mean "and the best of luck to you Sally!" I wonder.

I have tried to redesign the page but I don't think I'm going to get what I intended. Never mind.
I'll find out soon enough.

Registration complete.
